Hexadecimal, or hex, is base 16, and it is used for colors, memory addresses, and many programming values. The Hex to Decimal Converter turns a hex value into its everyday decimal number.

You can paste a value straight from code, with or without the 0x prefix, in upper or lower case. The place value working is shown too, so you can check the result.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter your hex value: type digits 0 to 9 and letters A to F, with an optional 0x prefix.
  2. Click Convert: the decimal result appears instantly.
  3. Check the steps: read the place value working under the result.

The Formula

Take each hex digit, from right to left, starting at position 0. Multiply the digit value by 16 to the power of its position, then add all the results. Letters A to F count as 10 to 15.

Worked Examples

  1. FF to decimal. F is 15, times 16 to the power of 1 is 240, plus F is 15, times 16 to the power of 0 is 15. 240 plus 15 is 255.
  2. 1A3 to decimal. 1 times 16 to the power of 2 is 256, plus A is 10, times 16 to the power of 1 is 160, plus 3 times 16 to the power of 0 is 3. 256 plus 160 plus 3 is 419.
  3. 2F to decimal. 2 times 16 to the power of 1 is 32, plus F is 15, times 16 to the power of 0 is 15. 32 plus 15 is 47.
