Enter a hex value and get the exact octal value in seconds, with the steps shown.
Everything runs in your browser, so your value never leaves your device. Whole numbers only for number base conversions.
A hex to octal converter turns a hexadecimal value into an octal number. Hex and octal are both shorthand systems for binary, but they group bits differently, so converting between them by hand is easy to get wrong.
The reliable route is through binary. Each hex digit becomes four binary digits, and then those binary digits are grouped in threes from the right to make octal digits. This tool follows that route for you and shows the result, with no rounding and no sign up.
This converter is useful for computing study, embedded work and reading older code that uses octal. Everything runs in your browser, so your value never leaves your device.
Convert FF to binary first: F is 1111, and the second F is also 1111, giving 11111111.
Group the binary digits in threes from the right: 11, 111 and 111. Pad the left group with a zero to make 011.
Convert each group: 011 is 3, 111 is 7, and 111 is 7.
Put the groups together: 377. So FF in hex is 377 in octal. You can check it, since FF is 255 in decimal and 3 times 64 plus 7 times 8 plus 7 equals 255.
| Input | Output |
|---|---|
| A in hex | 12 in octal |
| 2A in hex | 52 in octal |
| FF in hex | 377 in octal |
| 100 in hex | 400 in octal |
| 1F4 in hex | 764 in octal |
