Enter a decimal number and get its exact hex value, with the division steps shown.

Your result appears here.

Whole numbers only. Negative results use a plain minus sign, not two complement form. Conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Decimal numbers are the everyday base 10 numbers we count with. Hexadecimal, or hex, is base 16, and it is used for colors, memory addresses, and many programming values. The Decimal to Hex Converter turns any whole decimal number into its exact hex value.

Because it uses BigInt arithmetic, even very large numbers convert exactly, with no rounding. The division steps are shown too, so you can check the working or learn the method.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter your number: type a whole decimal number, with an optional minus sign at the start.
  2. Click Convert: the hex result appears instantly.
  3. Check the steps: read the division working under the result.
  4. Copy the result: click Copy and paste it into your code or notes.

The Formula

Divide the decimal number by 16 again and again, and write down each remainder. When a remainder is 10 to 15, write it as A to F. Keep dividing the quotient until it reaches 0, then read the remainders from bottom to top. That reading is the hex value.

Worked Examples

  1. 255 to hex. 255 divided by 16 gives quotient 15 and remainder 15, which is F. 15 divided by 16 gives quotient 0 and remainder 15, which is F. Read bottom to top: FF.
  2. 42 to hex. 42 divided by 16 gives quotient 2 and remainder 10, which is A. 2 divided by 16 gives quotient 0 and remainder 2. Read bottom to top: 2A.
  3. 1000 to hex. 1000 divided by 16 gives quotient 62 and remainder 8. 62 divided by 16 gives quotient 3 and remainder 14, which is E. 3 divided by 16 gives quotient 0 and remainder 3. Read bottom to top: 3E8.
