An octal to hex converter turns an octal number into a hexadecimal value. Octal and hex group binary bits differently, so converting directly between them is a common source of mistakes. The reliable route is through binary, and this tool follows it for you.

Each octal digit becomes three binary digits, and then those binary digits are grouped in fours from the right to make hex digits. Hex uses digits from 0 to 9 and letters from A to F, where A is 10 and F is 15. This tool shows the result with no rounding and no sign up.

This converter is useful for computing study, embedded work and reading code that mixes octal and hex values. Everything runs in your browser, so your number never leaves your device.

Worked example: octal 52 to hex

Convert 52 to binary first: 5 is 101, and 2 is 010, giving 101010.

Group the binary digits in fours from the right: 10 and 1010. Pad the left group with zeros to make 0010.

Convert each group: 0010 is 2, and 1010 is A.

Put the groups together: 2A. So 52 in octal is 2A in hex. You can check it, since 52 in octal is 42 in decimal, and 2 times 16 plus 10 equals 42.
