Everything runs in your browser, so your value never leaves your device. Whole numbers only for number base conversions.

A binary to octal converter turns a binary number, made only of 0 and 1, into an octal number, made of digits from 0 to 7. Octal is useful because it is a compact shorthand for binary, and it is still used in file permissions, embedded systems and older computing work.

The conversion is simple once you know the grouping rule. Every three binary digits make exactly one octal digit, because 2 to the power of 3 equals 8. This tool groups your binary digits from the right, converts each group, and shows the octal result with no rounding and no sign up.

Everything runs in your browser, so your number never leaves your device. That makes this converter a safe choice for homework, coding and quick checks at work.

Worked example: binary 101010 to octal

Split 101010 into groups of three from the right: 101 and 010.

Convert each group: 101 in binary is 5, and 010 in binary is 2.

Put the groups together in order: 52. So 101010 in binary is 52 in octal.

If the left group has fewer than three digits, pad it with zeros on the left first. Padding on the left does not change the value.
